This is our story.
From where we started to where we're going. This is the Mediapop story and the milestones along the way.
Our founder, Ryan Northcott, returns from LA destined to leave the entertainment business behind him. That lasts about a week. Ryan, along with David Haysom and Erik Brown, start FuddyTV on YouTube and at one point are in the top-100 most viewed channels in the world. Their first video, "Chuck Storm News Reporter Hits Pole", goes viral and is featured on CNN, BBC, and a million other places.
2007
FuddyTV is so successful the team is invited to Belgium to produce "Car Dance Party Belgium" for Toyota featuring their characters Boris and Juri who teach Belgians how to have a dance party in their car. The campaign and video go viral and win several awards including a Cannes Lion Gold.
2008
People get wind of the success of FuddyTV and Ryan starts producing video for the Fortune 500 company he works for, moving from the Tax Department (weird) to Marketing. Like the Beatles, FuddyTV breaks up and Ryan brings on Eric Giesbrecht to help produce the plethora of video projects coming in.
2009
Ryan and Eric officially incorporate Mediapop (called that because the domain was available) and start producing video for a handul of companies. Having run out of vacation and sick days, both quit their jobs and go full-time into the business.
2011
Hockey. A game of skill, speed, and strategy. Canada's pastime. Ryan is okay (having played Stevie Weeks in "Mystery, Alaska"), Eric is terrible, but on a cold winter night after a big-win we're sure, Ryan is asked if he can create a 3-year timelapse of a construction project. Emphatically, he said "Yes!" and then spent a month figuring out how to do it. OwlBox Construction Timelapse is born.
2013
Mediapop is growing and they start work with CMLC to capture the growth of East Village in Calgary. OwlBox is deep in the timelapse of the new Central Library. Mediapop starts to establish itself as a leader in video production and its creative and authentic approach to storytelling. They start to work across Canada and the US.
2015
With newly acquired technology and a growing creative process, Mediapop dips its toes into the world of Film and narrative storytelling. They produce "Ameera" a short film about technology and mental health, and Eric helps produce several other short films and documentaries.
2018
Prior to the pandemic, Mediapop was successfully working with brands around the world to produce branded content, but then a little pandemic came along and changed...well...everything. We pivoted, maintained our team, grew our client base, and produced "Once Upon a Pandemic" which was selected at several film festivals and was nominated for several awards.
2020
Something happened in 2021, we suddenly started producing and directing an insane amount of music videos. Since 2020, we've produced over 75 music videos for artists of all different genres. We're passionate about music and the stories that can be told through music videos.
2021
Mediapop has always been lucky to work with big clients, but working with Tate McRae and Apple Music is a special moment. Apple Music's "Up Next" featured Tate McRae and Mediapop took the producing reins. It's been viewed millions of times by her legion of amazing fans.
2022
Production wrapped on "Going Down" a film written and directed by Ryan Northcott and produced by Mediapop. The film is just entering its film festival run and has been nominated for several awards including Nikita Kalonji for Best Performance, and Best Original Score by the talented duo of John Morgan and Ryan Northcott.
2023
Mediapop today is a powerhouse in the film, video, and music video industry. We're proud of the work we do and the people that we work with. From creating concepts for big brands, to producing music videos for artists, managing post-production for film and streaming services, and producing our own content, we're starting a new episode in the Mediapop series. We're excited to see where it goes.
2024
What's Next?
Stay tuned for more exciting milestones as we continue to grow and evolve.
